What Is The Difference Between A Kitchen Remodel vs. Renovation?

People often use “renovation” and “remodel” interchangeably when referring to their home and kitchen projects. Suppose you are planning on making kitchen improvements. In that case, it is best to understand the difference between a kitchen remodel vs. renovation. Therefore, you know exactly what to ask a contractor. Homeowners often renovate and remodel their kitchens simultaneously, so it is understandable why many use both words interchangeably. To help you figure out which method is suited to your needs, here are the differences between remodeling a kitchen and renovating one.

The Purpose of a Kitchen Remodel vs. Renovation

While remodeling and renovation are used interchangeably, there are some critical differences between the two. For example, when someone remodels their kitchen, the kitchen undergoes some structural change that alters its design or functionality. On the other hand, a renovation is a process that typically involves making what was old furniture or fixtures into new ones. While each method may seem similar to you, as they are often done together, here are some examples.

Kitchen Remodeling Examples

Suppose you live in Abington, Pennsylvania. Your home is several decades old and is on the smaller side of houses in an urban area. And your kitchen may be small, and you want to add more space to make your home feel open and provide more opportunities for entertaining. One of the things you decide to do is remove a loadbearing wall to combine the kitchen and dining room. That is an instance of remodeling your kitchen. Other examples of remodeling include the following:

  • Constructing an addition to the kitchen to add more space
  • Turning a specific part of the kitchen into a mudroom

When you change your kitchen’s structure, design, or purpose (or just certain areas), you are remodeling it.

Kitchen Renovation Examples

An example of a kitchen renovation differs from that of a remodel. Suppose you live in an older home in Philadelphia or Horsham (where most houses were built from the 1950s to the 1980s), and you want to get new cabinets for your kitchen. Installing new cabinets is a renovation project because you are repairing, fixing, or updating your kitchen rather than changing the underlying structure or purpose of the room. Other examples of a renovation include the following:

  • Installing new countertops or flooring
  • Replacing old furniture with new ones (tables, islands)
  • Updating fixtures or plumbing and electrical systems

Although your kitchen may look different thanks to new cabinets or paint or fixtures, the kitchen remains the same in terms of layout and function.

Other Differences between Kitchen Remodel vs. Renovation

In addition to the difference in purposes of a kitchen remodel vs. renovation, there are other notable differences between them for homeowners.

One of the significant differences between the two processes is cost. Because remodeling projects are more complicated work due to changing a kitchen’s structure or design, it does cost more than a renovation project. Changing the design or layout of a kitchen may require reconfiguring the wiring, plumbing, and ductwork, and the material costs may be higher than a renovation, too.

As part of paying more for a kitchen remodel vs. renovation, you have more control over what your new kitchen can look like if you have specific goals. For example, if you have significant issues with your kitchen design. These issues could be the kitchen feeling too cramped or outdoor sink lines that freeze during winter. Remodeling can resolve these issues. In addition, remodeling allows you to bring your dream kitchen to life and gives you the chance to implement a new, more attractive, and practical design.

Can Businesses Stay Open during Commercial Property Remodeling?

During a commercial property remodeling, many business owners ask themselves and others is if their company can stay open during a remodel? Remodeling your business is a great way to enhance the appearance of your space for customers, and depending on your situation, it may be necessary. In addition, remodeling a business presents some challenges for the staff. Your company has to figure out how to accommodate customers during the remodel. This blog will show you if your business can remain open during remodeling and how you can prepare and plan for your commercial remodel.

Can Your Business Stay Open during a Remodel?

In general, yes, your business should be able to stay open and serve customers during a remodel. However, your commercial building remodeling projects may make staying open during operating hours difficult for you and your customers. Some companies in southeastern Pennsylvania, for example, provide services and meet their customers in-person infrequently. Keeping the business open during a renovation to their main offices can be relatively manageable. On the other hand, some companies need to serve customers physically. Depending on the specific remodeling project, regular working hours and serving customers will be challenging.

Businesses can run into a crossroads when having their offices or commercial properties remodeled. It is essential to try and stay open for business while renovating and minimize the effects of the remodel on staff and customers at the same time. So how can you, as a Pennsylvania business owner, work with a contractor or remodeler to resolve the challenges these renovations present? Here are some tips for handling your commercial property remodeling with a contractor.

Discuss Work Hours & Schedule

One piece of advice we have is that before finalizing any remodeling plans, make sure you discuss your plans to stay open with the contractor. Saturn Construction LLC has provided remodeling and renovation work for many local businesses. We understand how important it is for companies to maintain their regular working hours during a remodel. Therefore, we can advise you on what to expect with the remodeling work. We can also provide a work schedule from start to finish so you can plan around the remodel and always know what is happening with the work.

Make Plans for Where to Work During the Remodel

One of the other things you can do to prepare for commercial property remodeling is to plan where to work during the remodeling process. For example, say you run a business in Horsham and need to block a specific space in your building where a contractor will do the remodeling work. Working with an experienced general contractor like Saturn Construction LLC can help you plan around these issues and figure out ways to accommodate your staff and customers elsewhere. In addition, depending on the work being done, your staff and customers may hear some noise that remodeling a property comes with. So ask your contractor to create buffer zones to minimize the amount of noise during working hours and schedule when the remodeling work is done.

Keep Your Customers Informed

During the remodeling process, you should keep your customers informed about what is going on, how the work may affect them, and what changes you have made to accommodate them. For example, you can inform your customers with signs about what changes the office is undergoing or how your services are affected. Staying connected with customers online can also help by updating your website or emailing. And use the opportunity to get your customers excited about your company’s new look and how that will help improve their experiences or how you will serve them.

The Benefits of Quality Kitchen Carpentry and Remodeling

If you plan to remodel your kitchen, be sure you get a contractor who provides quality carpentry and remodeling services. The benefits of quality kitchen carpentry and remodeling range from simply enjoying your home and kitchen to increasing your home’s value, to functionality to an updated look and durable construction. Below are 3 reasons to look for quality carpentry and remodeling for your kitchen.

Make Your Kitchen More Enjoyable & Practical to Use

Have you ever thought your kitchen needed some new features or extra space, such as adding cabinets for more storage space? When you remodel your kitchen, your daily routines are more manageable, your space becomes more comfortable and enjoyable to use, and you have more options to meet your cooking or entertainment needs. Saturn Construction LLC’s experienced carpenters can remodel your kitchen to improve functionality and usability by expanding space, and building and installing premade and custom furniture such as cabinets or tables.

Philadelphia has a varied mix of older homes and modern ones, from row homes to single-family housing in the suburbs. Older homes especially might have smaller rooms that need restructuring to meet your needs. For example, say you want to make your kitchen into more of an entertainment space, and therefore you want to increase the amount of space by connecting the kitchen and dining room. In that case, we can remove walls (both load-bearing and non-load-bearing) to create a more open space that is more comfortable to use for entertaining.

Another example would be if you live in an older house, you can have old wiring replaced and the lighting fixtures updated during the remodel. So you would have improved visibility, which makes meal prep and cooking easier, or you could enhance your kitchen’s ambiance if you want to use the room more for entertaining.

The team at Saturn Construction has a history of designing and building kitchen projects that make for beautiful, enjoyable spaces while also using space intelligently, from clever cabinet and storage solutions to kitchen tables and islands.

Increase Home Value

One of the most significant benefits of quality kitchen carpentry and remodeling is increasing your home’s value. Of all the potential home improvement projects that can increase property value, remodeling the kitchen has one of the highest ROI. As discussed in previous blogs, remodeled kitchens can expect a return on investment anywhere from 50 to 70 percent, and here is why.

A kitchen is a significant factor that home buyers focus on when assessing a house. Buyers also show a willingness to pay more for a home with a newly remodeled kitchen than a house with an outdated-looking one. If your kitchen has undergone quality remodeling and carpentry work, you can attract buyers with eye-catching photos and recoup most remodeling costs by listing your home for more money.

Saturn Construction offers kitchen remodeling services based on your budget to help improve your ROI should you decide to sell your home in the future.

Update Your Kitchen with a Unique Look & Design

Another benefit of quality kitchen carpentry and remodeling is that you can update your kitchen’s current design and appearance to one that matches your unique preferences. A beautiful kitchen is a more comfortable space for you and your guests. And as we mentioned earlier, a visually appealing kitchen is excellent for catching the attention of prospective buyers (especially one that has a custom look.) If your home is several decades old, which many houses in Pennsylvania counties such as Bucks or Delaware are, remodeling will allow you to get modern kitchen amenities and design.

Working with our carpentry and kitchen remodeling firm will allow you to implement your unique or custom design. We can create and install furnishings and furniture, from pre-built to custom-made, to give your kitchen a distinctive look. In addition, we can provide you with professional recommendations on the materials to ensure durable construction and to help you achieve your design goals.

Why You Should Get Contractors to Install Hardwood Flooring

Getting contractors to install hardwood flooring is one of homeowners’ most popular home improvement choices, thanks to its appearance and durability. Experienced contractors can provide you with quality materials that will help keep your flooring looking beautiful for a long time. Contractors have the knowledge and experience to install hardwood flooring in various home constructions. A contractor can also help manage the project and guide you throughout the decision-making process.

Quality Materials

One of the most important reasons for hiring flooring installers and contractors is the quality of materials used. For your money, you want to make sure that your new hardwood flooring is high-quality, and the hardwood flooring materials Saturn uses meet those standards.

Our hardwoods are inherently long-lasting and can last even longer with regular maintenance. We work with high-end hardwood floor suppliers so that you can get various species of hardwood and construction types, such as engineered or solid wood flooring. In addition, some of the hardwoods we use have waterproof, scratch, and dent-resistant options. So when our contractors install hardwood flooring for you, certain hardwood choices we provide can make maintenance and cleaning more manageable.

Experience

Each house has unique dimensions and ages and is made from different materials. So every home has unique challenges that require various prep and installation methods. For example, many houses in Montgomery County, PA, are relatively old, some built earlier than 1959. Some houses we have worked on in places like Horsham or Warrington are close to 100 years old.

View of kitchen with island and door to patio | contractors install hardwood flooring | Saturn Construction LLC

As a result, the techniques and tools needed to remove and install hardwood flooring in those homes may differ from more contemporary ones. For example, removing old wide-plank floors (boards typically 8″ and wider) in an old house involves different work than replacing laminate flooring with hardwood in a more modern home.

A contractor who has installed hardwood flooring for many years will be familiar with various tools, techniques, and houses to give you the results you want. Homes in southeastern Pennsylvania are diverse: a broad mix of old homes from the 1920s to the 1950s, and newer homes ranging all the way to new houses built in the past few years. Our flooring installation contractors have a great deal of experience working with this diverse range of houses, so whatever the characteristics of your home may be, we can work with you and provide the hardwood flooring you desire.

Guidance

Our contractors’ extensive experience in flooring design and installation allows them to help you make informed decisions on every aspect of the project. For example, knowing what flooring type is best suited to the space and how to prepare an area for new floors can be difficult for homeowners. Suppose you have a 200 square foot kitchen (around the national average) that you are remodeling, and you are unsure which hardwood floor material to use.

A contractor can help you choose the best hardwood option to use based on your budget, design preferences, and how you will use your kitchen. Then, according to your needs and desires, a seasoned flooring contractor can help you figure out the best course of action for the flooring project.

The Difference between Woodworking and Carpentry

As people make remodeling or renovation plans for their homes, they can find themselves needing woodworking and carpentry services. When the time to search for these services comes, however, some people can be unsure which professional to call: a woodworker or a carpenter. People often use these terms interchangeably, but each field is notably different. To help, we will outline the differences between a woodworker and a carpenter and how you can figure out which one you need and when.

The Differences between Woodworking and Carpentry

While these two fields seem like the same thing to most people, there are slight but notable differences.

  • Woodworking is the skill of making items from wood.
  • Carpentry is a trade involving cutting and joining timber to construct buildings or other structures.

Generally, a helpful way to think about the difference is this: woodworkers make items out of wood, and carpenters typically install those wooden items or furnishings. That is the main difference between the two trades, and each one entails different services and skills.

Woodworking

Woodworking is the craft of constructing and building objects out of wood. These objects can range from bowls and musical instruments to furniture such as tables or cabinets. Many people think of woodworking as an art form or making art from wood, and while many woodworkers make art, woodworking also encompasses many other professional and industrial applications. For example, all of the tables, chairs, cabinets, and other furniture and furnishings you see in a big box retail store are made by woodworkers or automated woodworking equipment.

Carpentry

A Carpenter’s job is to construct, install, and repair various wood structures. A critical difference between woodworking and carpentry is the scale and types of objects made within each field. While woodworking ranges from art to everyday furniture, which tends to be relatively small, a carpenter’s job is to build or install structures or more functional objects. Some of the items a carpenter will build or install include roofing, frames, flooring, molding, and more. Often carpenters will specialize in certain aspects of a projects. For example, one carpenter will build the framing of a home kitchen, while another one will install and apply the finishes or trim to the cabinetry.

Other Differences

One other notable difference between these two professions is their locations and work environments. Woodworkers are more likely to be working off site in professional woodworking facilities or large industrial production places. Carpenters are more likely to work on residential or commercial buildings on job sites. The specific tools each field uses also differ: woodworkers use tools such as circular saws, jigsaws, routers and lathes, while carpentry tools overlap with construction tools, such as nail guns and levels.

How Do You Know Which One To Work With?

So now that you see some of the differences between each field, how should you know whether you need woodworking or carpentry for your remodeling or renovation projects? The answer depends on what types of services you need.

  • If you are building or remodeling your home and need someone to install flooring, roofing, cabinets, or other structural aspects, then you need a carpenter.
  • If you want new furniture and want someone to build it, such as a new kitchen table or cabinets, you need a woodworker.

What You Get For A 100k Custom Kitchen Remodel

Your budget is crucial when planning your custom kitchen remodel, and knowing what you can get for your budget will help you plan your remodel. Our previous blogs talked about the services you can expect with kitchen remodeling budgets of $25-45k and $60-90k. So what do you get for a high-end remodel? One trait that separates a high-end remodel from an average one is that design costs are a significant portion of the budget. That means you have more control over the materials and design of your new kitchen and have many more options. Here are some of the services you can expect to receive with a 100k custom kitchen remodel price and beyond.

Fully Custom Cabinetry

One of the main expenses of any 100k custom kitchen remodel is the cabinetry due to the cost of the wood. In kitchen remodeling projects over $90-100k, the cost for cabinets is likely higher than projects with smaller budgets due to the wood and custom cabinets and finishes. However, at this price point, you have the luxury of near-endless options regarding the materials and design of their new cabinets. Custom cabinets’ design, trims, and finishes can be extensive and whatever you desire: intricate and ornate, sleek and contemporary, and anything in-between.

With such a large budget, the wood chosen for the cabinets can be higher-quality or be more rare and exotic than the wood used in stock cabinets. Some examples of rare, quality wood often used in $90-100k+ kitchen cabinets include the following:

  • Mahogany
  • Cherry
  • Walnut

More exotic woods growing in popularity for kitchens include bamboo and lyptus. Fully custom cabinets can also have more glasswork, which is more expensive than a solid wood door.

High-End Countertops

Another high cost of a kitchen remodeling project is the countertops, especially if the countertops are made with exotic natural stone. At a budget over $100k, your options for natural stone countertops increase as the stones become more luxurious and exotic. Some exotic natural stone materials that make for good kitchen countertops include the following:

  • Marble
  • Granite
  • Quartz

In addition to the stone, the fixtures built into the countertops are also more upscale than the average remodeling project. For example, an average kitchen sink could be a typical double-bowl sink installed overtop the counter. In contrast, the sink would be more of a professional workstation in a 100k custom kitchen remodel, featuring larger bowls and accessories such as a built-in drying rack or cutting board.

Extensive Remodeling & Renovating

When remodeling their kitchens, homeowners may feel that extra space is necessary to accommodate new fixtures and furnishings. There are two ways that homeowners can achieve extra space: removing walls and exterior renovations. High-end kitchen remodels often include these services so that the project better ties into the homeowners’ visions. Contractors can remove load-bearing walls to open up the existing interior space, a great option if you have a small kitchen and want to give you and your family more room. Exterior renovations can include home additions to add more space or improvements to your home’s façade or siding.

Extravagant Lighting Fixtures

We offer improved wiring and electrical work for our kitchen remodeling services. While most homeowners focus on the cabinetry, flooring, and plumbing or cooking fixtures in their remodeling, new lighting can make a significant difference. For example, lighting underneath cabinets that shine over countertops can make working and cooking in your kitchen much more manageable, thanks to the enhanced visibility the lighting brings. Another popular lighting trend in custom kitchens includes track lighting that can provide light in multiple directions. You can also use lighting to enhance specific features of the remodel, such as the lighting in a glass cabinet.

Other 100k Custom Kitchen Remodel Services

In addition to high-quality materials, fixtures, and furnishings, a $100k+ kitchen remodel can also include additions or renovations that extend just beyond the kitchen, such as the following:

  • An area of your kitchen dedicate to washing and bathing pets, or to extend the house as needed
  • Mudroom with full built-in cabinets and furniture
  • Fully custom living areas such as a breakfast nook

At the $90-100k+ price range, you can bring the kitchen of your dreams to life.

The Different Types of Wooden Floors

If you are considering adding or changing to hardwood floors in your home, you have many quality options to pick from. Hardwood floors are beloved by homeowners for their durability, longevity, and aesthetics. However, choosing a hardwood floor involves much more than just picking a specific wood species. You also need to decide on the planks and the finishing. To help you evaluate, we go through the different types of wooden floors and the advantages of each one.

Solid Wood vs. Engineered Wood

Before picking out the wood species, an important choice in choosing between types of wooden floors is choosing between solid wood or engineered wood. Solid wood flooring is all wood, with the individual planks made from single hardwood pieces. Engineered wood is a thin veneer of natural wood glued over different layers, typically plywood or high-density fiberboard (HDF). Each of these categories comes with advantages and uses.

Solid Wood Advantages

One of the advantages of solid wood flooring is that the planks can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life cycle. With some maintenance, solid wood floors make a great choice for homeowners who want to have their floors last, and look beautiful, as long as possible. You can also choose from various wood species, cut patterns, and finishes, which is good if you have a specific species or style in mind and want to ensure your home has the ideal flooring.

Engineered Wood Advantages

Engineered wood has the advantage of being less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity compared to solid wood which can expand or contract depending on the season. So if changes in temperature and humidity are a particular issue or concern for you, engineered wood is a reliable choice for any room in your home. Another advantage of engineered wood floors is affordability. Because engineered wood uses less of the chosen wood than solid wood planks, you can have premium or exotic wood for your floors on a more affordable budget.

Unfinished or Prefinished

Another important choice when choosing your wooden floor is having the floor unfinished or prefinished. Unfinished wood flooring means “finished after installation.” After the contractors have installed and stained your hardwood floors, the flooring is given several coats of protective finish. On the other hand, prefinished is sanded and sealed after leaving the factory and being distributed to retailers. Like engineered and solid wood, both of these options have their benefits.

Unfinished Wood Advantages

If you go with unfinished wood, one of the benefits is that you have more options for how your new floor looks. For example, if you have a specific color paint in mind or want the color to match your old one, choosing an unfinished floor will ensure that it will be possible. The same goes if you have a particular stain applied before the final finish is put on.

Prefinished Wood Advantages

For prefinished wood, convenience and time are some of the biggest benefits. Since the finish is applied before leaving the factory, prefinished woods can make your flooring installation project go much quicker because the finish is already applied. You can also start walking around and using the room of your flooring installation much quicker than having to wait for an unfinished wood floor’s paint or finish to dry or smell to dissipate.

Choosing a Species of Wood

The last step of choosing between all types of wooden floors is deciding on the wood species to use. You have many options to choose from, although the best woods for flooring lean towards hardwoods. Here are some of the woods that make for suitable flooring:

  • Oak is the most popular species for hardwood floors in the U.S., meeting a good balance between availability, hardness, cost, and color options.
  • Maple is the second-most popular wood for flooring behind oak and comes in light colors and hues, a subtle grain, all while being harder than oak.
  • Hickory is highly durable and features large knots and colors that vary substantially from board to board, well suited for rustic and country-styled homes.

Mater bedroom with wood floor and closet | types of wooden floors | Saturn Construction LLC

Cherry and walnut also make good choices for floors due to their warm brown and chocolate colors, respectively, although both are softer than any of the woods mentioned above. Exotic woods cost more but can add unique colors, grains, and patterns to your home while being sturdy to endure heavy foot traffic.

What Does a $60-90k Kitchen Remodel Price Include?

If you are planning a kitchen remodeling project budget is a critical decision that we want to help you make. What does a $60-90k Kitchen Remodel Price include? In a previous blog, we talked about the features and services you can expect for a kitchen remodeling project of $25-45k. Some of those services included installing new cabinets, drywall, and flooring, keeping the existing water and plumbing lines, updating electrical outlets if needed, and more. A $30k budget is around the average budget of a kitchen remodel, so what would you get if you wanted a midrange, more extensive remodel? Here are some of the services you can expect to receive at a kitchen remodel price of around $60-90k.

High-End Cabinetry, Finishes & Trims

One of the most noticeable additions for projects with the $60-90k kitchen remodel price is that the cabinetry packages and furnishings come in higher quality trims and finishes. In a big-box chain store, you will find the cabinets on the lower end of the cost spectrum to have simple, straightforward designs, and the finishes are relatively basic, with limited paint colors and maybe some staining. At a higher price point, the cabinets will often be more intricate and complicated in their designs, often in the trim and molding connecting the cabinets to the ceiling and floor. The available finishes are also more numerous and higher quality, such as glazing to add texture and enhance the natural wood grain or finishes that prevent scratches or chips.

The same principle applies to the tiling, flooring, and wallpaper. For example, a $30k and a $70k kitchen remodel may replace old flooring with new materials, but the difference is in the materials. The $30k remodel may use luxury vinyl tile (LVT) for the new floor; the $70k remodel would use hardwood planks. At a higher budget, more money also goes towards the labor and time needed to make the cabinets, floors, tiling, and furnishings out of premium woods and metals that use more complex and detailed designs, thus being higher-quality work.

View of remodeled kitchen with fridge and hardwood floors | kitchen remodel price | Saturn Construction

Moving Walls

Another primary service offered at the $60-90k kitchen remodel price is moving walls within the kitchen. In the average kitchen remodeling project, the walls, both load-bearing, and non-load bearing, usually stay in place with some selective demolition of the drywall. For a mid-range kitchen remodel, the contractor is more likely to be demolishing or moving the walls of a kitchen. Removing load-bearing walls, in particular, adds to the cost of a remodel since the contractors have to install a new beam, build a new framing solution, and overall it requires more materials, expertise and labor.

Removing walls in your kitchen can bring many benefits. One, you have significantly more space to work with so that you and your family feel less cramped when preparing meals, cooking, dining, and entertaining. Second, removing walls in your kitchen opens up the possibility of changing the layout or adding new elements to your kitchen. For example, you may be remodeling your kitchen because you want to add an island and, therefore, extra need space. A midrange, $60-90k kitchen remodeling budget can allow you to add an island by tearing down a wall.

Extensive Wiring & Electrical Work

Midrange kitchen remodels can also include work done to update or revamp your wiring or electrics. Remodeling improves the value of your kitchen both through the materials used for cabinets, flooring, and other furnishing and woodwork. But often the unseen improved wiring and electrical work makes other updates possible. This is because many appliances and fixtures require new wiring or different placement of wiring and lighting. Some stoves or other appliance placements may require higher service loads.

One of the services Saturn Construction LLC offers, for example, is gutting all wiring and starting from scratch. New wiring helps bring your kitchen up to code, especially if you live in an older house. Your appliances can then be more efficient, and the chances of them performing optimally increases thanks to new wiring. We can also add a new subpanel to accommodate any new appliances.

Additions to Your Kitchen

At the $60-90k kitchen remodel price, some other additions you can add to your new kitchen include:

  • Pot fillers mounted above the stove to help save time and work
  • Bay or bow windows for a nook or extra seating
  • Garden windows to give you more space for plants in your kitchen

The $60-90k price range gives you plenty of options for how to improve the value and appearance of your kitchen.

The Role of Cabinet Makers in Different Types of Cabinetry

Cabinet makers are specialized woodworkers who design, fabricate, and assemble cabinetry. Their duties and skills range from cutting and shaping the wood to design to installation and more. So how involved will these woodworkers be in the entire process, from design to installation, depending on the kinds of cabinets their customers buy? Here is how cabinet makers are involved with your project and how that may change depending on what cabinets you purchase.

The Different Types of Cabinets, And How Cabinet Makers Are Involved In Your Project

Cabinets are grouped into four distinct categories based on the quality of construction and how homeowners, cabinet makers, and contractors use them throughout a remodeling process. These four types are ready-to-assemble (RTA), stock, semi-custom, and custom. While the cabinet maker is involved in constructing the various cabinet pieces, their range of used skills and techniques varies depending on the project.

Ready-to-Assemble (RTA)

For homeowners looking for the most affordable cabinet options, look for ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets. RTA cabinets are the kind of cabinets you find at chain home stores, ones where you need to assemble them yourself. In this instance, a cabinet maker constructs the components of a cabinet to be assembled by someone inexperienced in woodworking. The designs of these cabinets tend to be simple since the maker and manufacturer need to account for people of different DIY skill levels putting the cabinets together and perhaps even installing them.

Stock

Stock cabinets are mass-produced and just about fully assembled, ready to be installed at your home. Cabinet makers will have assembled all of the components of stock cabinets, trimmed and glued the multiple wooden pieces together, and may even install the cabinet depending on whether the homeowner opts to go the professional route over the DIY one. Stock cabinets are constructed from modular units and typically use particleboard covered with plastic laminates or solid wood. These cabinets may offer a relatively limited range of accessories, so if you want or need certain accessories (or sizes), you may have to look towards more custom cabinets.

Semi-Custom

Semi-custom cabinets allow for some size adjustments and a wide selection of materials and styles. For a semi-custom cabinet, you may be working much more closely with the cabinet maker than if you were to purchase an RTA or stock one. For example, a homeowner who wants custom doors and drawers may work either directly with the cabinet maker or indirectly through a sales representative. In addition, the construction process may be much more involved and complex than with RTA or stock cabinets. The cabinet maker may have to use their knowledge of wood and metal to find better materials and use more complicated and higher-quality construction methods.

Custom

At the highest end is entirely custom cabinetry. These cabinets are wholly made-to-order and offer the most diversity in style, material, finishes, and accessories. Like the semi-custom cabinets, you may be working closely with the cabinet maker on the design, materials, and installation of a custom cabinet. Intricate and complex construction and assembly techniques are often utilized with custom cabinets as part of their quality, such as dovetail joints. A cabinet maker has the opportunity to make full use of all of their skills, training, and knowledge when working with custom cabinets.
